Having loads of 'loose' apps or having then all in folders? I'm guessing having them 'loose' is slower but not sure. My iPhone is v slow with plenty if space left

Even though the apps are not in use, the OS is holding memory for them. Either fully close the apps by double-clicking the home screen to bring up the taskbar then pressing and holding until the "jiggle" and then press the minus sign or/and restart your iPhone daily. I usually do both.
You could also download (<<iTunes linky) from the App Store which will show you how much RAM is in use.

By loose I mean not in a folder. I already shutdown my apps properly but it's still slow n jerky

Being in a folder or not shouldn't make any difference.
How often do you restart your iPhone? Which model is it?

Best restarting it every day. I usually use Airplane Mode as well but usually reboot once a day.

hmm, that's odd how u have no space left and urs isn't that slow. Mine is consistently laggy and was even affecting my games today. Do you have ur apps in folders or not?
