I havn't done anything – promise!
But the last time I pulled my i4 out of my pocket, it was missing 2 icons – Camera & Safari. They havn't been moved, they've gone, and the other icons have all moved to fill their place. Safari was in the fixed bottom row too, which now only has 3 apps.
Also I see that if I hold an icon to get them to jiggle so I can move them, there are no crosses on the installed apps. I can move them though, but not delete them.
A restart doesn't solve it, so I guess a 'Restore' is required.
Any ideas?

Before you restore do a hard reset.
Press the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears. The iPhone will then reset itself and reboot. It may take a longer time than a normal start up.

Chris, thanks, but not necessary this time.
Dgibby, you've hit the jackpot! In response to 1979-mod's "Warning" post about funds being stolen from one's iTunes account using the 'purchase within app' facility, I set restrictions on for that case only. It seems that Camera and Safari took offence and decided to hide too although I had not selected them. So ... restrictions off again and I'll take my chance about 'within app' theft. Operations back to normal, except I have several pages of icons to restore to their proper places (which I'll do in iTunes).
Thanks for your very early and spot-on reply!
