Purchased late October 2018.

Just been sat eating my lunch and browsing on my phone when it shut down of its own accord while showing 70% battery. Tried to start it again and got the red “empty battery” symbol. Left it a while and tried again, then started normally saying 58% battery but shut down again when I started using an app. Tried to start it again but just got the Apple logo for a few seconds. Now plugged into power and working normally again. Battery health says 86% capacity.

Will a new battery fix this or is there a larger problem?

Battery has had it, replacement will sort it - Recommend http://www.macfixer.co.uk who is a forum member and Apple approved repair specialist.
